Connecting the Parts

The use of Twitter and absorbing other people’s views and opinions is something that definitely got through to Phelps-Roper rather than the people who yelled at her during picketing and counter-protested to silence them and helped her broaden her perspectiveThus, when people like Abitol saw her as human and didn’t make her feel like she was wrong even though she didn’t line up with his views she started to change. CG played a role in her becoming more of a part of a community of people who saw her as human too. So, I think this is a good example of why Konnikova thinks that in person social interaction is better than interactions over social media. So, I think that people may not see each other as human on social media and not acknowledge the other person’s point of view because they can just scroll away from the conversation. Therefore, people learn about other people’s views in person better because if you are in person you can be on a more human level with them and you acknowledge the person’s view more.

The Dunbar number applies to the narrative of Phelps-Roper because although social media helped her message reach so many people, she never really knew who they were. For people such as CG this was true. She talked to him over Twitter and he never seemed to reveal himself and she knew nothing about him (Chen). She only knew he was an attorney. Konnikova says “the most intimate Dunbar number, five, is your close support group”(Konnikova 2). I think that Abitol is Phelps-Roper’s version even though it is only one person.

  1. I found I rely on pointing words and repetition much more than using transitions. I saw that I used many more pointing words than repeating my key terms. I used the word this many times along with pronouns such as she.
  2. After adding some transition words to my first paragraph it flows better and is easier to read.
